All About Church Day

These Church Day events include two of our four-part seminar series on UCC Identity. For more on the UCC Identity Seminars,

Organized as part of the work of the Overview Board for Faith Enhancement and Leadership Training, the purpose of Church Day events, is to:

  • Train lay persons in areas of leadership, including administration, education and outreach;
  • Develop a sense of community among people in various congregations, affirming both similarities and differences and opening avenues for mutual support;
  • Provide opportunities for local church pastors and members of their congregations to spend time together in fellowship and meaningful conversation about their mutual ministries;
  • Offer authorized ministers opportunities to meet Life-Long Learning requirements for continuing standing in the NCNC;
  • Provide components of the UCC Identity Seminars, meeting requirements for dual-standing and privilege-of-call pastors for understanding UCC ministry, history, polity and theology.
  • There will also be a display area; congregations and ministries are invited to bring resources and information.

Inspired by the successful Forums for the Future held in 2005-06, the name Church Day came from the German "Kirchentag" held since 1949. Check out www.kirchentag.org.uk

Kirchentag was begun in 1949 by Reinhold von Thadden-Trieglaf as a lay movement following the isolation of the church from the state during the Nazi era. The purpose was to "draw together Protestant Christians in Germany in order to strengthen them in their faith, to prepare them for responsibility in their churches, to encourage them in witnessing in the world, and to have solidarity with those in the worldwide community of Christendom."

Last year 128,000 people attended Kirchentag in Hamburg. The Conference hopes to offer an equally enriching experience for ministers and lay leaders alike in NCNC congregations.
