FROM THE NCNC OVERVIEW BOARD FOR JUSTICE AND WITNESS
THANKS FOR YOUR GIVING TO NEIGHBORS IN NEED!

The Overview Board for Justice and Witness extends heartfelt thanks to everyone - churches and individuals who have contributed to the annual Neighbors In Need offering.

About NIN
one

Neighbors In Need expresses the United Church of Christ's commitment to ministries of justice and compassion in the United States and Puerto Rico, as we speak prophetically to those in power and advocate for the voiceless. In the spirit of Christ, we seek to confront evil in the world and to alleviate suffering through justice advocacy and direct service. Sunday, October 2, is the suggested date for the Neighbors In Need special mission offering.

(The following information is quite dated, but it gives you an idea of how NIN funding is divided to support ministries here in our Northern California Nevada Conference as well as through the national ministries of the UCC. We hope to update the info soon!)

...Between November 27, 2000 and November 26, 2001, sixty NCNC congregations contributed $54,854.63 to Neighbors In Need. Approximately one-third of that offering was retained by the Conference to support those neighbors in need within the borders of the Northern California Nevada Conference.

The Church & Mission Commission receives the local NIN funds and oversees their distribution. In past years your offerings have provided support for:

  • Berkeley Organizing Congregations for Action (BOCA) - a faith-based coalition of congregations who respond to the needs of the wider Berkeley community. Three Conference churches are BOCA members.
  • Puente/Bridge Ministry of Pescadero Community UCC which builds bridges of understanding and respect between Mexican migrant workers, farm owners and residents of San Mateo County coastal communities.
  • Parkside Community UCC in Sacramento has developed several programs to enhance and enable their commitment to become a multi-racial, multi-ethnic congregation. Among these is an expansion of their successful parish nursing program.
  • Central Coast Interfaith Sponsoring Committee - a coalition of churches in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties responding to the needs of the diverse communities in that part of our state. Two Conference churches are founding members.
  • In addition, the Church & Mission Commission has given grants from NIN dollars to make affordable housing a reality in Benecia, assist the partnership between the Conference and the Tainan Presbytery of the Presbyterian church of Taiwan, and sponsor a Conference-wide workshopp on church-based health ministries.

In 2002, we look forward to further funding of some of the above as well as new projects organized and/or supported by local NCNC congregations. With your ongoing support, we have every confidence that this will happen. Thank you and God bless!
